During
our time in Venice, we stayed away from the most popular attractions,
at least in the daytime... instead, we explored less crowded places. At
night, however,
the streets and canals are virtually empty,
and you can experience the magic of even the most popular spots with almost no one around. The Rialto bridge..
so different from a few hours ago, when it was swaying with a thousand feet.
A few blocks away, hidden in a side street, the Da Fiore restaurant specialises in seafood..
Venice's famous Murano glass adds colourful touches to the warm and cosy interior
we settle in..
Walking back to the hotel through dimly lit streets and squares.
Nearing midnight, the ever buzzing St Mark's square is almost deserted,
and the café's musicians have finished playing their last tune..
Venice goes to sleep,
and the gondolas are tucked away for the night

ReplyDeleteThanks Maitai, really enjoyed that trip. That last post did it for me and I surrender: I love Italy but Venice to me 10 years ago was a ticked box. Done. But the sheer idea of walking it at night like you did is tipping me over the edge: don't like crowds and love visiting a city at night. If I go back, that's just what i'll do!

ReplyDeleteThank you, cewek! We stayed at the Bauer (they have three hotels in Venice..ours was by the St Mark's Sqaure -or should I say Harry's Bar-, which is a great location. You can always go to the more tranquil Bauer Palladio for meals or to visit the gardens.. see my previous post on Giudecca). Have fun!

I am curious to know where do all of the people go at night? Maybe they cleared the way for you knowing it was a special celebration? ReplyDeleteThe difference between day and night was literally... day and night! I don't know where everyone was gone.. perhaps to an early bed, after a long and exhausting day of sightseeing. The walk from the Da Fiore back to the hotel is unbelievably busy at daytime (around the Rialto bridge it resembles a theme park), but at night, it felt like being in one of the final scenes of 'Don't look now'..we expected to see a shiny little red coat at any moment! DeleteWhile we were having breakfast, my DH took a stroll through Venice with you! He always remarks on what an amazing photographer you are! You really should offer a series of these for sale in MT Collection! They are suitable for framing!

The food at Da Fiori was very good, my dear Monica! I thought it would be raining that night, which is why I booked... it is so cosy inside. As it turned out, the evening was mild and so we could have eaten al fresco somewhere else... but it did not matter, as we had a fabulous meal, and a most wonderful time. Re the glasses, I am with your DH, and prefer classic glasses for wine. I was tempted to get some waterglasses as a souvenir, but decided I have already enough glasses which are not dishwasher safe. Will have to go back if I miss them too much ;-)
